How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of your Signal chats
Signal has deployed Automatic Key Verification, a new feature that validates chat security without requiring users to manually compare safety numbers, using cryptographic auditing to ensure the Signal server isn't performing key substitution attacks. Trail of Bits operates one of three independent auditors that continuously verify the system's integrity by maintaining signed Merkle trees of the user-to-public-key mapping, limiting any potential malicious server compromise to a one-week window before client warnings trigger. Users can enable this feature in Signal's privacy settings, with the system requiring valid signatures from all three auditors (operated by Signal, Cloudflare, and Trail of Bits) within the past seven days to prevent undetected mismatch attacks.
